Six Warning Signs Your Electrical Panel Needs Attention
September 7, 2026 · Royal Plus Electric
Your electrical panel does its job quietly, so most people never think about it until something goes wrong. The good news is that a failing panel almost always gives you warnings first. Here are the six signs our electricians see most often across the Eastern Shore.
1. Breakers That Trip Again And Again
A breaker that trips once is doing its job. A breaker that trips every week is telling you a circuit is overloaded or a connection is failing. Resetting it over and over is not a fix.
2. Buzzing Or Crackling Sounds
A healthy panel is silent. Buzzing, sizzling or crackling usually means a loose connection or arcing inside the panel. Arcing generates heat, and heat starts fires. Treat this one as urgent.
3. Warmth Or A Burning Smell
The panel cover should feel like the wall around it. If it is warm to the touch, or you smell hot plastic near it, call an electrician the same day.
4. Flickering Or Dimming Lights
Lights that dim when the air conditioner or a big appliance kicks on can mean your panel is running out of capacity for the way you live now.
5. Rust Or Corrosion
On the coast, salt air and moisture find their way into everything. Rust on the panel or its breakers means moisture has been inside, and that is a safety problem.
6. An Old Fuse Box Or A Recalled Panel
Many older Shore homes still run on fuse boxes or panels from brands with known failure records. If your home is more than 40 years old and the panel has never been replaced, have it evaluated.
